Sundowning: Dementia Awareness & Exploration

This collection is meant to showcase my perspective, knowledge and creative ideas around dementia.  I have a grandmother who suffers from dementia and a grandmother who works in this field, so I am exploring and expressing my feelings of sadness, confusion, curiosity, and love.   I believe that my grandmother is thinking, discovering, and living, even if it’s a world that only she can comprehend.  I’d like to acknowledge those who work with and care for dementia patients every day, giving their hearts, minds, and time to help families. Through this experience, I hope we are all moved to a place of deeper understanding, compassion and gratitude.

My family gave me my first easel, canvas, paints and brushes when I was 7, and they’ve been instrumental in giving me the freedom and permission to express myself. My parents  introduced me to beautiful art museums and galleries but I am also inspired by interior design and photography.

I cherish the ideas of cohesion, intention, and thoughtfulness, not only choosing what colors go on the canvas, but what parts of life and story I want to share with the world.  I approach my paintings from a cerebral aspect. I enjoy the process of learning, researching, and asking questions to gain understanding that I then turn into imagery. When I start with the mental, it helps me creatively, the things I’ve learned inform my train of thought and inspire my results. It’s so exciting when I get into a zone, where the shapes and colors are pouring out of me.  My brushes and I are fearless, my mind free and full of ideas. Acrylic paint on canvas are my choices for this journey and as I learn more about the history of artistry, I am discovering that these are the styles that are emerging in my work:  Conceptualism, African, Pop, Abstraction …

Always, B!
